Tamang Heritage Trail Trekking is quite different from other normal mainstream adventures around the Himalayas. A country walks from one nice farm village to another in harmony with beautiful scenery amidst high snow peaks.
Tamang Heritage Trail Trekking is more of an exploration and discovery of hidden trails and remote settlements of local natives. The Tamang people the indigenous mountain tribes of Nepal's Central and Mid-West and Eastern Himalayas.
Migrated to Nepal's northern hills and valleys, as a horseman and Calvary more than 5,000 years back. The history of their long journey from Inner Mongolia and through Tibet and settled around the southern Himalayas. In the past few decades, the present generation are famous as sportsmen and in Nepali and Tamang music. By profession, they are farmers and raising livestock, and expert craftsmen and paintings are known as Thangka. Religious art of Tibetan Buddhism, the Tamang still follows their ancient heritage cultures. As it were for thousands of years and interwoven to Buddhism and Bon sec to pre-Buddhism. 
 Some Tamang also known as soothsayers or Shamanisms the ancient arts of healing sick people through mystical chanting. The villages around the Tamang Heritage Trail of Rasuwa district remained isolated from the rest of the country.
 But slowly emerging into the world of modern civilization, as the influx of foreign visitors is slowly on the rise.

A moderate adventure with a slight touch of high altitude on reaching the highest point of Nagethali Gyang hilltop. Rewards with a jaw-dropping panorama of the snow-mountain range of Langtang, Ganesh as far as towards Manaslu Himalayas.
Tamang Heritage Trail also falls within the old Trans Himalaya Salt Trade Route of Nepal and Tibet / China. Where trade still exists through the frontier post of Rasuwagaddi and Timure village, close to the route of our journey.
The adventure begins from the farm town of Syabrubesi heading towards Gatlang and Tatopani villages. As the walk proceeds with a climb to the high hill of Nagethali facing ever-present majestic views of snow-clad peaks. Then slowly our exciting journey comes to an end on reaching Thuman and Briddim village reaching Syabrubesi.
Then taking an interesting drive to Kathmandu, on completing a fabulous adventurous of great experience on Tamang Heritage Trail Trekking.

The Best Seasons for Tamang Heritage Trail Trekking:
Tamang Heritage Trail Trekking best in spring and autumn/fall. The spring starts from March to May when days are longer with enough sunlight hours. 
Normally the morning till mid-afternoon days are clear for views and scenic walks can get overcast late afternoon sometime. Can expect snowfalls, with cold morning and nighttime, and the mid-hills covered in the forest will be bright with wildflowers; in seasonal bloom. Especially the rhododendron of various colors from tall trees to a bush, which is the national flower of Nepal.

The next high season is autumn/fall, from September to November, most days are fine and crystal clear. One can enjoy pleasant walks along with glorious views of surrounding snow-capped peaks. Days are much shorter due to limited sunlight hours, cold afternoons, and nights till morning time. Can get snowfall sometimes, but with a bright starry night sky. 

Culture and Religion around Tamang Heritage Trail:
The native of Langtang region around the district of Rasuwa, populated by the Tamang people. The indigenous tribes of the Central Himalayas follow Buddhism of Mahayana sect of Nyingma or Tibetan Buddhism. 

The Tamang also practice the Bon sect of pre-Buddhism an ancient cult. 
Worship of nature and mountain spirits with Shamanism, the custom of age-old heritage. The ancient tribe migrated from Inner Mongolia through Tibet to Nepal's high hills and mountains. With a history of more than 3,000 years back, the Tamang settled in the northern hills of Kathmandu and Mid-West / East Nepal. The word Ta for Horse and Mang is a rider, hence the name Tamang or Horse rider. As they were Calvary or soldiers riding on horses, some have changed the title to Lama as well. 

The Tamang celebrates various religious events and festivals, the main events are Saga Dawa, the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha. As well Sonam Lo-Shar is the New Year as per the life-cycles of animals and birds. Falls around January as per the Buddhist Lunar calendar. The Tamang are farmers raising and breeding live stocks but since the arrival of foreign visitors. At present, the local economy is dependent upon tourism, as one can experience on this trek. All villages and every house is adorned with Buddhist prayer flags and religious monuments.

Trip Itinerary

On arrival at Kathmandu and Nepal International Airport, after clearing the visa formalities, and claiming the baggage. Head towards departure exit, where our staff receives you for a short transfer to the hotel. After getting refreshed join on the lobby with other members for Langtang Valley trek briefing, provided by our guide, leader. On briefing full information of the treks, and hotels in Kathmandu as well of local cultures with do’s and don’ts. Evening a lovely dinner introduction to Nepali foods with exciting cultural programs. 

Morning after breakfast, our city / cultural guide takes you on a tour visiting world heritage sites around Kathmandu city. Includes Old Durbar Square / Palace Courtyard, residence of Living Goddess the Kumari; and to Swyambhunath Stupa with more 2,600 years of history. Then head towards holy Hindu temple of Pashupatinath and Bouddhanath a huge Buddhist Stupa. After an exciting and interesting tour back to hotel, preparation and packing for trekking.

Non-essential clothing and items not required for treks, can be stored in the Hotel or with Everest Adventure Tour.  

The drive to Syabrubesi, begins the drive early morning after a good breakfast for a long journey of about six hours or more. Depending upon the road condition, as well there is two route to reach up to Trisuli Bazaar en-route to Dhunche town and Syabrubesi. Taking the shortest way head down beyond Kathmandu valley reaching a small town of Galche. From here across the bridge, and then on good road following the Trisuli upstream to warmer areas of Trisuli Bazaar, the main town of Nuwakot district. Drive continues heading along the winding uphill entering the district of Rasuwa, where air gets cooler on reaching Dhunche the headquarters town of Rasuwa and Langtang region. As well the entry point of Langtang National Park, from Dhunche on the winding zig-zag downhill to Syabrubesi, once a small farm village. At present has become into a small town enjoy the overnight in the comfort of a nice lodge or guest house. 

Enjoying the first overnight around the Tamang village of Syabrubesi, nearly a size of a small town. The starting point of various trekking routes around Langtang Himal region of Rasuwa district and beyond. As well the main highway to Tibet / China border of few hours drives. From Syabrubesi walk begins after breakfast, heading north-west, as the trail climbs facing views of Ganesh Himal. 
Then enter Goljang valley of farm fields, a small village for possible lunch stop, afternoon on gradual ups to Gatlang for overnight stops. 

Gatlang a large settlement of Tamang native, on arrival greeted by the village community with traditional welcome. Then transfer into a cottage or stone huts which serves as a Home-Stay. Which is another new approach in sustainable tourism of Nepal and around remote Himalayan areas.

Having time to explore around and to observe the village life and activities of great cultural and religious interest.

Enjoy a free, leisure day in Gatlang, a perfect an ideal place to explore local cultures and traditional farm life. Visit the villages and view-points overlooking grand scenery of surrounding beautiful landscapes and snow peaks.

Gatlang with an old monastery, quite interesting for tour and learn about Tibetan Buddhism known as Mahayana. Rest of the day interact with the local, makes the stay in Gatlang more interesting.

Morning from Gatlang lovely village, head down to river walking past few farm areas and smaller settlements. Afternoon walks climbs to cross a hanging bridge to reach Tatopani village for overnight. Enjoy the comfort of a nice simple lodge or Home Stay huts and having simple Nepal meals for dinner.

The name Tatopani for Hot Water, the village with natural hot springs, which existed before the big earthquakes of 2015. Which devastated many villages and towns around Nepal Mid-West and East, and disrupting the source of hot spring of Tatopani. Afternoon explore around the villages and observe the simple way of farm life and activities. 

Leaving the lovely farm village of Tatopani, todays walk leads to steep climb for few hours; on top Nagethali Gyang a high ridge. The walk heads to another nice village of Brimdang for possible lunch stop. From here continue the journey uphill through beautiful forest of pines and rhododendron tree lines. Finally the climb ends on reaching Nagethali Gyang Danda, a high hill. Located on an open grassland with majestic panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks. 

Having a short stop for the grand views and brief visit of the small nearby monastery. The trek continues heading downhill to Thuman village, enjoy the overnight halt with friendly villagers. Enjoys having merriment singing and dancing as an evening entertainment, along with the dinner, a simple local authentic meal.

From Thuman village an enjoyable pleasant morning walks on fairly flat winding path, then short descends to Timure village. Located close on route to Nepal and Tibet border, a lovely village for lunch stop. Afternoon the walk continues to Briddim, another nice Tamang village. Staying overnight in the comfort of Home- Stay huts, run and managed by the village community. Evening enjoy the fun and merriment with local native, as they perform small cultural programs with dance and singing folk songs.

Last day walk of the adventure, enjoy the morning treks to Syabrubesi village, a pleasant walk more or less on downhill. Following the river downstream through several farm terrace and hamlets. Then slowly our walks concludes reaching Syabrubesi village for last and final overnights around the land of Taming’s. 

Afternoon enjoy a stroll around the town like village and observe the local handicrafts on sale. Which will be a great valuable souvenirs of Tamang Heritage Trail. 


Morning leaving much early for the long and interesting overland journey heading uphill to Dhunche town. From here on winding down to reach Trisuli Bazaar, and then on good road to Kathmandu. After an exciting drive through farm towns and villages, on reaching the city area transfer to your hotels.

The trail on route to Tamang Heritage, as for the mountain trails around all Himalayan region. Is almost similar as landscapes wise, the walk on this trek is quite moderate with few short steep ups and down. Encountering some gradual winding path for short while, the only tough part is climb to Nagethali Gyang Hill top. The highest point of the treks, but rewards glorious spectacular views of snow mountain range. Taking slow and steady is always the best on Himalayan trails, as well having short stops to catch with the views.

At Syabrubesi and Gatlang the accommodation are of good standard as well with the choice of food from the menu provided. More or less nearly all villages provides basic and simple lodge accommodation, but clean small rooms.

However, spending overnights in community Home Stay cottage or huts, the rooms are quite big. Most places with common bath and toilets to share, the food are simple like the famous and popular Nepali Dal Bhat. Boiled or steamed rice served with mild vegetable curry and meats as options. Along with home-made spicy pickles and Dal the lentil soup of variations from one place to another.

Some lodge offers Tibetan style breads, noodles of variation with Dumpling called Mo-mo, stuffed with mince meats or vegetables.

But an enjoyable environment on overnight stops in nearly all villages on route trekking around Tamang Heritage Trail. 

Less visited region of trekking than its neighboring villages around busy and popular route of Langtang Valley and Gosainkunda areas. Over the past years the Tamang Heritage Trail is slowly drawing more visitors from domestic to foreign trekkers. Gaining gradually the flow of trekkers choosing the quiet and serene cultural location of Tamang Heritage Trail.

All lodges have hydro-power to run electricity, or by solar power, where trekkers can charge their electronic items and gadgets. A fee is charged per hour for each items, as for internet and Wi-Fi, have connection. Depending upon the areas in deep gorge and valley, as well weather wise, can be disturbing with bad receptions. The best place is Syabrubesi, Gatlang, Thuman and Briddim.
The other places do works well with local SIM. Which can be bought in Kathmandu at reasonable cost.

Spring season from March to May. The whole areas on route Tamang Heritage Trail will be bright and lively with wildflowers in seasonal bloom. The surrounding forest of Langtang area looks magical as natural wild garden. Trekkers can observe the wildflowers of all colors and different species. Especially the rhododendron flowers of great variation from tall trees to short bush.

Truly an enchanting place to experience during the spring time of March to May when the hills are alive and bright with wildflowers. The next best time is autumn / fall of September to November, an enjoyable season for treks. Where days are bright with sunny days for clear views and pleasant walks. But the day are shorter due to limited sun-light hours.
