The Best Seasons for Ghorepani & Poon Hill Trekking:
Interested people can join for Ghorepani & Poon Hill trek in all seasons, except for the wet months of monsoon; mid-June to August. The best favored seasons are spring and autumn/fall. The spring starts from March to May, when days are longer with enough sunlight hours. Normally the morning till mid-afternoon days are clear for views and scenic walks can get overcast late afternoon sometime. Can expect snowfalls, with cold morning and nighttime, and the mid-hills covered in the forest will be bright with wildflowers; in seasonal bloom. Especially the rhododendron of various colors from tall trees to a bush, which is the national flower of Nepal.

The next high season is autumn/fall, from September to November, most days are fine and crystal clear. One can enjoy pleasant walks along with glorious views of surrounding snow-capped peaks. Days are much shorter due to limited sunlight hours, cold afternoons, and nights till morning time. Can get snowfall sometimes, but with a bright starry night sky. Trekkers can also enjoy Ghorepani & Poon Hill during the winter times of December to February. Most days are clear and sunny, but much shorter days due to limited sunlight hours. Cold freezing temperatures in the morning, evening, and night time, chances of snowfall also.

Culture and Religion on Ghorepani & Poon Hill Trek:
The native of the southern Annapurna Region is populated by the Gurung and Magar Poon hill tribes. Interwoven with the teaching of Buddha. Which is known as the Mahayana religion of Nyingma or Tibetan Buddhism sects. 

The Gurung and Magar-Poon people celebrate various religious events and festivals, the main events are Saga Dawa, the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha. 

As well the Tamu Lo-Shar by Gurung tribes, the Magar people celebrate the major festival as well as Dashain. Nepal’s national biggest festival last for Ten Days. 

Which falls at the end of September or the first week of October, the festival of victory over evils. The Gurung and Poon-Magar are farmers raising and breeding live stocks but since the arrival of foreign visitors. At present, the local economy is dependent upon tourism, as one can experience this trek to Ghorepani and Poon Hill from Pokhara onwards. 

Besides Buddhism, the Gurung also practices the ancient religion of pre-Buddhism called Bon. Worship of nature and mountain spirits, and most Gurung villages do not have monasteries. But every house is adorned with Buddhist prayer flags, and the lower mid hills of Annapurna are of mixed tribes of people. Populated by the Hindu Chettries and Bharamins with Dalits, as well Magar the main tribes of Western Nepal.

Most Gurung and Magar menfolk are world-famous as brave Gorkha soldiers in the British and Indian Army as well as Singapore Police.

Trip Itinerary

On arrival at Kathmandu and Nepal International Airport, after clearing the visa formalities, and claiming the baggage. Head towards departure exit, where our staff receives you for a short transfer to the hotel. After getting refreshed join on the lobby with other members for Ghorepani & Poon Hill trek briefing, provided by our guide, leader. On briefing full information of the treks, and hotels in Kathmandu as well of local cultures with do’s and don’ts. Evening a lovely dinner introduction to Nepali foods with exciting cultural programs. 

Morning after breakfast, our city / cultural guide takes you on a tour visiting world heritage sites around Kathmandu city. Includes Old Durbar Square / Palace Courtyard, residence of Living Goddess the Kumari; and to Swayambhunath Stupa with more 2,600 years of history. Then head towards holy Hindu temple of Pashupatinath and Bouddhanath a huge Buddhist Stupa. After an exciting and interesting tour back to hotel, preparation and packing for trekking.

Non-essential clothing and items not required for treks, can be stored in the Hotel or with Everest Adventure Tour.   

Morning or afternoon as per the flight time for Pokhara, transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport. After going through security, get on board in a big aircraft for sweeping panoramic flight of 30 minutes. Enjoy the grand views of majestic 
Himalayas from Langtang, Ganesh and Manaslu Himal to Annapurna range.

Landing at Pokhara airport, a short drive to your respective hotels, located by the
serene Phewa Lake side. Afternoon at leisure for short walks around the lakeside, where all best shops, stores, restaurants and hotels located. Enjoy the views of Annapurna peaks with towering Machhapuchare Himal the famous Fish-Tail peak.

Morning leaving Pokhara for a few hours of exciting and scenic drive beyond the city and valley of Pokhara. Heading west to low warm farm country, and then drive leads on winding up to cooler hills at Hille. A small lovely farm village, the walk starts with short climb to Tirkhedhunga village with beautiful waterfalls.

Crossing a bridge, and the climb uphill on stone steps for an hour or more having short refreshing stops. As well enjoying the surrounding landscape scenery and then finally reaching on top of a hill. Where a large Ulleri village situated, populated by Magar people, the main hill tribes of Western Nepal.

Enjoy the views of Annapurna peaks and check into a nice local lodge, and explore the village farm life.


Today a short morning walks to Ghorepani, the main overnight destinations of the adventure. From Ulleri after a steep climb of previous first day, today a short and moderate walks on winding slow up. The trail leads to beautiful forest of pines and rhododendron to the main welcome gate and entrance of Ghorepani village.

A short up to the top of Upper Ghorepani village, where grand views of Dhaulagiri Himal range awaits you. Check into a nice lodge for lunch and overnight stop, rest of the afternoon enjoy the surrounding beautiful scenery. Ghorepani located amidst enchanting woods of rhododendron and pine trees, beneath Poon Hill.

Early morning hike up for an hour or more to the top of Poon Hill, for stunning sunrise views. A great scenic hill top and the highest point of the adventure, besides striking sunrise. Enjoy fabulous panorama of world’s highest peaks of
Dhaulagiri, Manaslu and Annapurna Himalayas with arrays of snow peaks.

After a fresh morning breathtaking views, walk down to Ghorepani for breakfast and continue the trek. The route leads on an alternative trails with slow climb to Deurali, almost the same height of Poon Hill. Facing tremendous views of
Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Himalayas with majestic Machhapuchare Himal, the famous Fish Tail peak. From Deurali top down to a gorge through beautiful dense rhododendron and pine woods to Bhanthati a small settlement. Stopping for lunch in one of its many lodge restaurants, afternoon walk down to a stream.
After crossing a small bridge climb for an hour or more to Tadapani, a nice settlement with 5-6 lodges. Enjoy the views of Annapurna Himalayas from Tadapani, surrounded in a dense forest.

An easy and pleasant morning walk as well a short day to a large Gurung village of Ghandruk. Starting the trek through a dense beautiful forest, then heading downhill reaching an open area with views of Annapurna Himalayas.

From the scenic top, a short downhill to Ghandruk village and enjoy the lovely comfort in a nice lodge. At Ghandruk for lunch and last overnight halt around the mountain village of Annapurna Himalayas. Afternoon ample time to explore the new and old traditional village of Ghandruk, as well visit the small Gurung museum.

Last day of the adventure, morning a short walk downhill on leaving Ghandruk to a small farm village of Kimche. From here out trek completes taking an interesting drive on winding down to Modi River, around warm farm areas. Reaching nice village of Bhirethati and then to Nayapul, joining on the main highway to Pokhara.

After few hours of exciting drive entering Pokhara city, and then to your hotel by the Phewa Lake side. Rest of the day at leisure for individual activities or enjoy the boat ride on the calm waters of Phewa Lake.

As time for short scenic flight to Kathmandu, transfer to Pokhara Airport for sweeping smooth air journey. After a grand panoramic views of country landscapes and snow peaks, then landing at Kathmandu airport.

From the airport, a short drive back to your hotels rest of the day at leisure for individual activities. 

Final day in Kathmandu and Nepal, as time for your international flight for homeward bound or next port of call. Transfer to Kathmandu, Nepal international airport bidding farewell to your guide and staff, after a marvelous and enjoyable adventure on Ghorepani & Poon Hill trek.

A moderate adventure as well a short trek, all age group can enjoy the walk to Ghorepani and Poon Hill. Where altitude does not make a difference, the only tough is climb uphill on first day to Ulleri village. Including hike up to Poon Hill and then to Deurali on return journey. But taking slow and steady with enough short rest can overcome the steep and hard section of the treks. Rest of walk is more downhill on the way back to Pokhara. Families with young children and elderly people of 75 to 80 years of age can join. All should be in normal physical shape and good health, if someone has any medical history can take advice from your doctors before signing for the treks.


Trekkers will be surprised to find good food menu of varieties, from Tibetan, Nepali, Indian and Chinese to Continental. Includes long list of snacks and drinks for the customer delights in most lodges on treks. 

The lodge accommodation are nice and lovely according to the choices of the trekkers. From budget, standard to luxury accommodation at Ghandruk village, either attached or non-attached bath and toilets. But in Ulleri, Ghorepani and Tadapani the lodges are simple and clean with nice rooms with large and warm dining.

All lodges have hydro-power to run electricity, or by solar power, where trekkers can charge their electronic items and gadgets. A fee is charged per hour for each items, as for internet and Wi-Fi, have connection. Depending upon the areas in deep gorge and valley, as well weather wise, can be disturbing with bad receptions. The best place is Ghorepani and Ghandruk, other places works well with local SIM. Which can be bought in Kathmandu at reasonable cost.

Spring season from March to May. The whole areas of Ghorepani till Tadapani will be bright and lively with wildflowers in seasonal bloom. The surrounding forest of Ghorepani is listed as the world’s natural rhododendron garden. Trekkers can observe the wildflowers of all colors and different species. Especially the rhododendron flowers of great variation from tall trees to short bush.

Truly an enchanting place to experience during the spring time of March to May when the hills are alive and bright with wildflowers.
